CCL: HEN GALAN, OLD NEW YEAR

In some parts of Wales, people celebrate the New Year on the 13th January. People celebrate by preparing special foods and drinks. Some people travel from house to house with the Mary Lwyd to welcome the coming year.

Children go from door to door and sing to receive the calennig (a present). They carry apple charms called a perllan.

This week we have celebrated Hen Galan in our classroom. We learned four lines from a Welsh song and did our own parade with a Mary Lwyd puppet.
